Farmer Welfare Grant 2026 — £1.5 Million for Rural Mental Health Organisations

Farmer Welfare Grant 2026 — Up to £200,000 for Organisations Supporting Farmer Mental Health

⚠️ Application portal opens: 6 August 2026 — closes 9 September 2026

A significant new grant has just been announced for charities and voluntary organisations working to support the mental health, wellbeing and business resilience of farming communities across England — including across the North West.

Please note: This grant is for organisations that support farmers — not for individual farm businesses. If you’re a rural charity, agricultural support organisation, or community group working with farming families in Cheshire, Lancashire or Cumbria, this is for you.

What is the Farmer Welfare Grant?

A total of £1.5 million will be available over 3 years to support farmer mental health and wellbeing across England. The funding is intended to help rural and agricultural charities and organisations deliver practical support that strengthens both personal and business resilience across the farming sector.

Farming can be an isolating profession. Long hours, financial pressure, unpredictable weather, and the emotional weight of managing a family business across generations all take a toll. This grant recognises that and backs the organisations doing something about it.

How Much Can You Apply For?

Grants of between £1,000 and £200,000 per year are available, covering expenditure incurred between November 2026 and March 2029 — a three year funding commitment which gives genuine stability for project planning.

Funding can cover both one-off and ongoing costs including overheads, venue hire, materials, equipment, service delivery costs, and staffing costs directly related to the project.

Who Can Apply?

Any charitable or third-sector not-for-profit organisation registered in England can apply, provided it can demonstrate experience of supporting farming communities and the ability to deliver a suitable project.

For-profit organisations may also be eligible as part of a consortium led by an eligible organisation, provided they can demonstrate how their role contributes to meeting the funding criteria.

You do not need to be a farming organisation yourself — but you must have demonstrable experience of working with and understanding farming communities.

What Priorities Will Be Funded?

Defra is not prescribing specific activities — it wants organisations to design support that responds to the genuine needs of farming communities. However applications addressing the following priorities are particularly encouraged:

  • Tackling isolation and reaching farmers less likely to access existing support
  • Promoting prevention and early intervention — building resilience before problems escalate
  • Reducing stigma around mental health and seeking help
  • Removing barriers to accessing personal and business resilience support
  • Supporting a joined-up approach to farm safety, physical and mental health, and business resilience
  • Preventing suicide and supporting those at risk
  • Supporting those who work with farmers including intermediaries and allied industries, and farmers’ families
  • Engaging young farmers and helping them stay connected to strong rural communities
  • Strengthening culture, local identity and social connections within farming communities
  • Providing business resilience advice — succession planning, change management, leaving the industry
  • Building skills, confidence and capacity in farmers and the rural community
